About Geneva
Geneva is Switzerland's second-most populous city and the most populous in French-speaking Romandy, situated in the southwest where the Rhône exits Lake Geneva. It is a global city, an international financial centre, and a worldwide centre for diplomacy, often called the 'Peace Capital'. The city hosts the highest number of international organisations in the world, including many United Nations agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Geneva was where the Geneva Conventions on humanitarian treatment in war were signed, and it hosted the League of Nations after World War I. The city's municipal territory covers 15.86 km², with an elevation of 375 m at Pont du Mont Blanc. Geneva is known for landmarks such as the Jet d'Eau, the Reformation Wall, and the Palace of Nations. The city has a rich history, from its Roman origins as an Allobrogian border town to its role in the Protestant Reformation under John Calvin in 1541, and it joined the Swiss Confederation on 19 May 1815.
