Durban is South Africa's third-most populous city and the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal province, situated on the east coast along the Indian Ocean's Natal Bay. It is the busiest port city in sub-Saharan Africa and was formerly known as Port Natal. The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, wet summers and mild, dry winters. Durban is the seat of the larger eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, which spans 2,556 km² and had a population of 4.2 million in 2022. The city itself had a population of 595,061 in 2011. Durban has a diverse heritage with large Zulu, Indian, White, and Coloured populations. Notable places include the Golden Mile beachfront, Botanic Gardens, the Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum at City Hall, the Tudor-style Playhouse Theatre, uShaka Marine World, and the International Convention Centre. Durban was one of the host cities of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, for which the Moses Mabhida Stadium was built, and is UNESCO's first City of Literature in Africa.
