Essaouira is a port city on Morocco's Atlantic coast in the Marrakesh-Safi region, known until the 1960s as Mogador. Founded in 1769 by Sultan Mohammed III, the city was designed with the help of architects including Théodore Cornut and Ahmed al-Inglizi to serve foreign merchants, and it became Morocco's most important commercial port and diplomatic capital between the late 18th and first half of the 19th century.
