About Malé
Malé is the capital and most populous city of the Maldives, located on the southern edge of North Malé Atoll (Kaafu Atoll). With a 2022 population of 211,908 within an administrative area of 8.30 square kilometres, it ranks among the most densely populated cities in the world. The city comprises a central island plus six others: Hulhulé, Hulhumalé, Villimalé, Gulhifalhu, Thilafushi, and Giraavarufalhu, administered by the Malé City Council. The central island is heavily urbanised, with built-up areas covering essentially its entire landmass. A commercial harbour on the central island serves as the heart of the country's commercial activities, while Velana International Airport is located on Hulhulé. Historically, Malé was the King's Island, where ancient royal dynasties ruled and the palace stood; it was formerly a walled city with fortifications and gates. Islam has shaped the city's identity since 1153 CE, visible in landmarks such as the 17th-century Hukuru Miskiy (Friday Mosque), built from coral stone and among the oldest mosques in the country. The Royal Palace (Gan'duvaru) and forts were destroyed during remodelling after the monarchy was abolished in 1968, but the Friday Mosque and the National Museum building remain. The island has been considerably expanded through land reclamation in recent decades.
